With your blog you will want to upload, documents, pictures, video and other files to your server for your posts. Also, you will want to backup and upgrade your blog software. To do this you will need to use a FTP program. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the simplest and most secure way to exchange files over the Internet. Whether you know it or not, you most likely use FTP all the time. For example FTP is the backbone of the MP3 music craze, and vital to most online auction and game enthusiasts.

Setting up the FireFTP program is as easy as using it. To get started, download and install FireFTP The installation is the same as any other Firefox add-on (plugin) and will require that you restart Firefox. It’s accessible either from Tools in the menu bar or you can add a FireFTP icon to the toolbar via customization options. You can also set the program to open in a new window or in a new tab, and it will run conflict-free with other major Firefox extensions such as FoxyTunes, Speed Dial, or AdBlock Plus.

FireFTP looks and acts a lot like a dual-pane file manager. Its left pane displays the contents of the local hard disk, while the right one shows the directories and files on the current FTP server. The address bar at the top of both panes allows you to jump to a particular directory without clicking through the directories. It also remembers visited locations, so you can quickly navigate to any previous directory by choosing it from the drop-down list. To transfer files between your local machine and an FTP server, you can drag and drop them between panes, or you can use the Arrow button.

FireFTP features a handy account manager, which allows you to set up multiple FTP accounts, or quickly connect to an FTP server without saving any account settings. To do the latter, press the Manage Accounts button and choose Quick Connect. In most cases, however, you probably want to create a permanent FTP account for often-visited servers. To add a new account, choose Manage Accounts -> New and fill out the required fields under the Main tab. Using the import/export feature in the account manager (Manage Accounts -> Import/Export), you can easily transfer your existing FTP accounts to another computer or store them safely as a backup.

Besides the standard features, FireFTP also offers a few more advanced tools. For example, the Directory Diff command allows you to compare the current local and remote directories. Although it doesn’t check the files for modifications, it can be useful for keeping the directories in sync. Other tabs allow you to tweak an account’s default settings. For example, you can specify the initial local and remote directories under the Options tab, so when you connect to the FTP server, FireFTP automatically opens the specified directories. Although the extension sports the Compare Directories feature, it can’t sync modified files (different files with the same name).

While FireFTP may not be as powerful as a dedicated FTP client, it does offer all the features you’ll need 99% of the time. With its ability to transfer files via FTP directly from within Firefox makes it a compelling choice for most users.

Most surprisingly, it didn’t cause any system sluggishness or freezes. There are, however, a few drawbacks. Windows Vista support has been spotty, and because of Firefox limitations, the app can’t transfer files larger than 4GB, nor can it access network folders. Proxy support works for some, but not others. Despite these problems, the plug-in is stable, easy to use, and provided enough with advanced features to make it worth using. Here is another great reason why Firefox is a Bloggers best friend.

Here you begin with the option of showing ads to Administrator. You then may also choose to exclude any particular post or page from displaying ads. To use the Exclude option you will need to go back to your Manage page option, in your admin area, and get the ID number of the posts or pages that you want to block ads from appearing. This may be appropriate to use for pages on your blog such as About, Contact or Advertise Here.

The Page option begins with the ad setup for your Front Page. You decide which ad code settings are to be used, the ad alignment and which additional posts (1-10) your front page ad setup will be displayed upon. You are able to choose multiple ad locations with combinations of different ads to be placed in your posts and where the ads appear. For example, using a combination of Alignment options you can pick different ad formats such as a Leader board ad placed on top, then a Skyscraper ad placed on the right side and a Banner ad placed on the bottom. Note that different types of AdSense ads require the use of proper ad placements to be effective. Also the Middle option requires 2 or more paragraphs to work properly. Keep in mind that Google will only allow you to display up to three different AdSense ads per page. Always save and preview your blog for your desired configuration. After you have setup your Front page ad settings you will want to continue with the setup of other pages on your blog.

Shylock Options Menu - Page options

This is a continuation of the above Page options with the exception of the Post Number option is missing. An additional nifty feature is located here that helps you manage your ad campaign used for older posts. This may seem kid of strange, but it can come in handy if you choose not to display ads in your new posts, keeping your regular visitors happy. Then follow up with a more aggressive monetized ad campaign for those search engine visitors. Note that the Older than x days options will not be applied until the blog post age is achieved. And if this option is left blank all previous options will be used on all posts.

Tips and Tricks:

This is where this widget gets really cool! AdSense ads are not the only items that this widget helps you place in your blog posts. Come on, say what? Yes, this super kewl widget can place anything into your blog posts. You can also insert YPN and CPM ads, custom banners or buttons, your favorite post box or anything else you want to present to your viewer’s attention.

I am so tired of reading about the latest non-effective blog tools. So I decided I won’t be reading these expert opinions anymore. I’m not going to waste anymore of my time. It’s always the same old things said over and over again. It starts with something like “How to create Blog Traffic”. Then you read the advice of every Guru’s “Guide to the Insider Secrets to Blog Traffic”.

My blog traffic success story is not going to come about by reading these articles. I am going to take my own advice and “JUST DO IT”. I mean, I’m simply going to stop reading and just do it. It seems to be a little too obvious, but that’s just what it is. JUST DO IT. When I’m done with this article, I’m going to have completed the following:

1. Join a blog community and update my profile.
2. Reach out and give my opinion and comments on other blog postings.
3. Open my blog to others and welcome comments for blog traffic exchange.
4. Get the blog tools to achieve my goal.
5. Send my post to blog aggregators in my blog ping list.
6. And start to BLOG.

Now that I’m soon to be past this step, I will concentrate my efforts on content and learning from my new blogging friends and their experiences. Then I can take a bit of time to look for and see the success of my simple action of just “saying HI” has brought me.

I already have my own blog which you are reading from. I’m joining the http://www.mybloglog.com community and update my blog link then copy their mybloglog script into my blog. I will do some blog research at http://blogsearch.google.com and build a list of other common blogs to introduce myself with honest comments to post on their blogs. I have already added my blog aggregators to my blog ping list, as outlined in my previous blog post (check it out) and the mybloglog widget. Now it’s time for a free blog traffic exchange by asking for a review of this post from the new blogs I visited from my earlier research. It’s just that simple. Additionally you need to create a comprehensive Atomicblogging Plugin Ping List in WordPress. This is a necessary update to drastically increase traffic to your blog. This will also increase the amount of spider links to track who is linked to your blog and who you are link to with RPC2 services or other websites, all done for you automatically.

What’s with that? And some of these guys were talking over 56 sites. Okay, so their list is bigger than mine, what gives? And what is a good number to have, and should I increase it, or just leave it alone?

So how big is your ping list? It’s OK, go ahead and take a peek yours. You can find your ping list by doing the following:

1. Log into your blog address with /wp-admin extension.
2. Click OPTIONS and under it that, click WRITE.
3. Scroll down to the bottom this page to view.

A good number to start with your ping list is one. Less than one would mean that you don’t want to broadcast your blog to the web. Ping-O-Matic is the default blog posting update service that WordPress has setup. Ping-O-Matic will broadcast to multiple services notifying them that you’ve updated or posted a new blog.

When building your ping list keep these considerations in mind:

A) Prevent multiple pings from the same post to a single blog post service to avoid the SPAM flag, 3 seems to be the limit most blog post services excepted before spam becomes an issue.

B) Validate your ping list to ensure that none of them time-out and that you have a valid URL address. Each additional ping will increase the amount of time required to post or update your blog. There are freeware programs available to ping sites to get a response, I used Utility ping.

C) Verify - Certain web hosts - particularly free ones - disable the PHP functions used to alert update services. If your web host prevents pings, you should stop WordPress from attempting to ping and consider using other blog post update services such as Feedburner Pingshot.

D) Add - There are WordPress widgets available that help you control when you send out pings. They help with scheduling posts updates and or whether to post only for a new post and not when updating existing posts. Look at these plug-in widgets very carefully while you choose and install them. If not setup up properly they may cause inadvertent pings, threaten your blog site status.

I combined a manual ping list from information posted on various blogs by WordPress, Elliott Black, SEO Blog, SEO Black Hat, RPC and RPC2 services lists and Dicontas Blog. I then went to each listed ping site a requested a ping, all the listed URL’s below returned a valid response.

This is the largest package I’ve downloaded on the internet thus far (over ½ a Gig). Life is to short, make it EZ

As I said, I’m a professional Internet Newbie. But I don’t intend to be one for long. When I started I told myself, I have a good understanding of what the internet is all about and how it can be used to promote ideas, businesses and generate revenue. It’s massive, overwhelming, abundant and rich with wealth, my source of news, I make purchases over it, my source for emails, and I stay in touch with what’s going on right now. It’s awesome and all just so simple.

So why not create my own website, express my internet personality and make some money in doing so. I think we all share this same thought and interest. And as I began, I believe that we also share some of these same questions; how do I start, where do I go to begin, how much money is this going to cost me, how long will it take to start seeing the fruits of my labor? After all the internet is so easy, I can do it. So, I told myself lets just get going. I’ll start researching, see what products and information is available. I can figure this out with a little help and I’ll be on my way. It may be hard at first and I know I will have to do my homework, but I can do it. So I did.

So as a new “Newbie”, I began by searching the internet looking for advise and a “how to guide” to model my new adventure. I found that the good news is that there is a lot of information available, both free and others that cost me bucks. The bad news is, who’s right and worse yet is there a right model to follow that matches my finances, and time. Then the question that was always in the back of my mind…WHO CAN I TRUST?

I learned my first lesson; you can’t trust just anyone out there. I knew that, and I thought I would be able to find and recognize a trustworthy source that I could rely on. That became the biggest obstacle I had to overcome. The problem is this; we all share the same interest in making money. I know its earth shattering news, but how do you know there is validity behind a sales pitch or is it just another person’s way of making a quick buck off of you? I quickly learned that being new you are at their mercy. And I began to feel the pain in my wallet of not being able to find a trustworthy source.

Thank God, I found sources and individuals that have my trust. So I decided that I want to have a Blog to share my experiences, offer my opinion on products, plans and offerings that work and those that don’t. As we combine our war stories both positive and negative, we can create an environment that is beneficial to all. Don’t get started off on the wrong path to nowhere, other than to make a thief rich.

This Blog will be used as sounding board of what I have found to work and who and what to avoid as money trap. I know I may piss off people, and so be it. I have no problem exploiting a weasel. I will be honest with my experience and welcome all your experiences. This internet is so BIG that there is room for all of us to make some money and share with the Newbie’s the pitfalls that are out there.

So I welcome your input, questions and opinions on what out there. Throw it out there on the table! What works, who do you trust and who or what to stay away from and why. You won’t hurt my feelings. And I enjoy hearing about success stories that we can all learn from.
